The open heart is set with a sequence of gemstones spelling DEAREST: diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire, and topaz. The gems are claw set in a heart shaped frame. The bar design is accented by gold collars near each pearl. This brooch is a fine example of sentimental Victorian jewellery with a hidden romantic messaging in its gem set code. Circa 18601870.
