Maybe to squeeze the sun? . Moon Man measures 13" tall x 4. 5" wide x 8 deep. The screw clamp adds another 2" to the height when it is closed. It is unsigned. The wood is dark reddish brown, very hard the type is uncertain. It looks like Cocobolo, an exotic wood native to Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. Mr Moon
